Cybersecurity: Learning About TCP/IP

Understand protocols, routing, and network security mechanisms

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the operation of the TCP/IP suite of protocols, essential for understanding network communications and modern cybersecurity.
You'll learn about the layered architecture of the TCP/IP model, the principles of public/private addressing, the basics of routing, and the roles of key protocols such as IP, TCP, UDP, ICMP, ARP and SNMP. Common network services (DNS, FTP, Telnet, SSH, etc.) are also covered, as are security concepts such as VPN, IPSec, SSL/TLS and filtering mechanisms.
The course also covers multimedia data transport protocols (VoIP, video over IP) and introduces recent developments: IPv6, SNMP v3, MPLS, Quality of Service (QoS) and Cloud Computing.
Key for anyone working in IT, networks or the web, this course lays the technical foundations needed to understand and manage secure network environments.

Objectives

To become familiar with the role and operation of all protocols from the TCP/IP family.

Is it for you ?

Network administrators, Web specialists, IT managers, project managers and directors (other than CEOs)..

Prerequisite

Knowledge of network technologies (Course RE101).

Your benefits

  • Understand TCP/IP architecture and core network protocols
  • Master IP addressing, routing concepts, and routing tables
  • Analyze key protocols (TCP, UDP, ICMP, ARP) and their use cases
  • Identify network services (DNS, FTP, SSH, SNMP) and their roles
  • Implement fundamental TCP/IP security mechanisms (VPN, IPSec, TLS, filtering)
  • Content

    • Multi-layer architecture: TCP/IP
    • Public and private IP addresses
    • Routing: routing tables, routing protocols (RIP, OSPF) vs. routed protocols
    • ARP protocol (MAC address resolution) and RARP protocol (MAC reverse address resolution)
    • IP protocol: services, addressing and routing
    • ICMP (Internet Control Message) protocol
    • UDP (User Datagram) protocol: kinematics, ports and datagram format
    • TCP (Transmission Control) protocol: kinematics, ports and segment format
    • SNMP (Simple Network Management) protocol
    • The DNS, FTP/SFTP and Telnet/SSH services
    • TCP/IP security: virtual private networks (VPN), IPSec, SSL and TLS and access control lists
    • Voice over IP, IP telephony
    • The future of TCP/IP: IPv6, Voice over IP, telephony, SNMP V3, MPLS and quality of service (QoS), Cloud Computing
