ITIL 4® Service Configuration Management: Ensuring Data Reliability and Gaining Visibility

Making your infrastructure a source of truth

Without reliable configuration data, every IT decision rests on fragile foundations. The ITIL 4® Service Configuration Management practice allows you to structure the collection, control, and updating of information about configuration items (CIs), making it a true source of truth for the organization.
This one-day training course allows participants to explore the entire practice: concepts, processes, roles, technological tools, the role of suppliers, and implementation recommendations.
Designed for IT professionals looking to improve the visibility and governance of their infrastructure, it concludes with an exam voucher for the official ITIL 4® Practitioner: Service Configuration Management certification, issued by PeopleCert.

Is it for you ?

Training content

In complex IT environments, incorrect configuration data can trigger a cascade of errors: poor diagnostics, poorly evaluated changes, and prolonged incidents. This one-day training course allows participants to explore the Service Configuration Management practice in its entirety, from conceptual foundations to implementation recommendations.

1 Exploring the foundational concepts of Service Configuration Management

Participants will cover the basics of the practice: definitions, configuration items (CIs), the configuration management system (CMDB), and how it ties into the ITIL 4® Service Value System.

2 Deconstructing the practice processes

Participants will explore in detail the processes that structure configuration management: identification, control, recording, auditing, and verification of configuration data. The focus is on consistency and traceability of information throughout the service lifecycle.

3 Defining the necessary roles and skills

Participants will see how responsibilities are distributed within the practice: who collects, who validates, and who maintains the data. This block helps clarify expectations for each stakeholder and avoids redundancies or blind spots.

4 Leveraging information and technology for configurations

Participants will work in workshops on the role of auto-discovery tools, IT asset management platforms, and configuration databases in ensuring data reliability. They will see how technology can automate updates and reduce human error.

5 Mobilizing partners and suppliers in the practice

Participants will explore the role of third parties (solution providers, integrators, managed service providers) in configuration data quality, and the governance mechanisms needed to ensure each party contributes to information accuracy.

6 Developing practice maturity with the ITIL capability model

Participants will approach the ITIL 4® capability model applied to configuration management: how to assess the organization's current maturity level, identify priority gaps, and define a realistic improvement plan.

7 Implementing the practice successfully: Key recommendations

In closing, participants will look at the factors that determine the success or failure of the practice in a real-world context: data governance, team buy-in, long-term quality maintenance, and integration with other ITIL 4® practices.
