Objectives

To provide the knowledge and skills required to make effective use of the new features of HTML 5 in creating structured Web documents and Web applications.

Target Audience

Developers.

Prerequisites

Experience with HTML web page creation (Course WE106) and JavaScript (Course WE105). Familiarity with the CSS-3 standard is desirable.

Content

  • HTML5 syntax: elements, attributes, DOCTYPE
  • New structural elements: section article, header, hgroup, footer, nav, aside, figure, time
  • Custom attributes with data
  • Forms: new input controls; the placeholder, required, min, max and autofocus attributes; the datalist, meter, progress and output elements; editable content
  • User interaction: drag and drop, the browser history API
  • SVG support for incorporating vector graphics
  • Graphics and multimedia: interacting with canvas using JavaScript; audio and video elements; supported audio and video formats and codecs
  • Application development: local storage, microformats, geopositioning, multitasking with web workers
  • HTML5 browser support
  • Tools for HTML5: Modernizr, validators
